"Music gives a soul to the universe..."

Puerto Rican soprano Lucero del Mar Hernández Pérez, a distinguished award winner, has captivated international audiences since the beginning of her career. She performed with the University of Puerto Rico Concert Choir in the Czech Republic and Rome, Italy, under the direction of Marilucy Rodríguez.

Her musical journey began with a Bachelor's in Psychology from the University of PR, where she was a distinguished member of the prestigious University of Puerto Rico Concert Choir. During her time with the choir, she performed throughout Europe including the Czech Republic and Rome, Italy. It was during these formative choir years that Lucero discovered her passion for opera, inspiring her to pursue formal vocal training. This led her to earn a Bachelor's in Music from the Interamerican University of San Germán, where she trained with Maestro Rafael Alfonso and pianist Nilda Betancourt. Lucero later completed a Master's in Voice from the prestigious Mannes School of Music in 2020, studying with Beth Roberts and coaching with Susan Caldwell.

Lucero's dedication to her craft led her to participate in masterclasses and coachings with renowned figures such as Joan Dornemann, José Meléndez, Kamal Kahn, Yelena Kurdina, Ted Taylor, Laquita Mitchell, Ruth Falcon, and Guarionex Morales Matos. Her career highlights include her role as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana with Opera para el Pueblo 2017, a third-place finish at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and the Antonio Barasorda Award in 2019. She debuted with Mannes Opera in Street Scene, where she also prepared the role of Suor Angelica by Puccini.

Her versatile voice, often compared to the great sopranos of the golden era, continues to gain recognition in the international opera scene as she carves her place among the luminaries of opera.

In 2024, Lucero participated in The Sounds of the Archives at CENTRO, debuting original compositions by Puerto Rican composer Guarionex Morales Matos from the poetry of Pedro Pietri. In December, she debuted in Ánjelamaría Dávila: Aliento Sonoro, also by Matos, showcasing her artistry in contemporary music. Lucero has performed at events hosted by the Mayor of New York City and continues to perform in recitals across the city and internationally.

Beyond her performance career, Lucero is renowned as an exceptional vocal coach with a gift for nurturing young talent. Her students have successfully auditioned for prestigious music institutions and conservatories across the United States and Puerto Rico.
